Oliver Wolcott, Sr.

1. Oliver Wolcott, Sr. was born November 25, 1726 and died December 1, 1797. Wolcott was from Windsor CT. Wolcott attended Yale College in 1743 and graduated in 1747.After College he went into the army and gained a caption's commission. He recruted a company immediatly. After returning back from the French and Indian War, he began to study medicine with the guidence of his brother, Dr. Alexander Wolcott.
3. On January 21 1753 he married Lorraine Collins. They had five children in ten years. Their first child, Oliver Jr., was born January 11, 1760 but died young. He was followed by Frederick Wolcott, born on November 2, 1761. Then came Laura Wolcott, born on December 15, 1761, and lastly Marrian Wolcott, born on February 16, 1765His father was Roger Wolcott, the Royal Governor of Connecticut. Oliver was the eldest of fourteen children.
4. After the Revolution, Oliver was elected Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut in 1786. He stayed L. Governor for ten years. After his ten year reign, he became a presidential elector. That very same year the known town in Connecticut, Wolcott, was named after Oliver Wolcott, Sr. He became governor of Connecticut after the previous governor died. Oliver was then reelected as governor. As a part of the Revolutionary War, Oliver commanded fourteen regiments and was made a Brigadier General. Throughout Februrary to July he attended the congress of Yorktown.
5. Oliver was only one of the many people who signed the Declaration of Independence, thus he was invlolved in the birth of the United States. He fought for freedom from the British in the Revolutionary War. OliverWolcott.gifOliver Wolcott became a patriot by making his country stronger.
